Is God A Big Delusion? - April 2007 event

Is God A Big Delusion?

We are delighted to have Chris Sinkinson coming to talk to us on this topic.

Date: 26th April 2007

Time: 7pm for 7:30pm start

Location: The Connaught Hotel, West Hill, Bournemouth

Speaker: Chris Sinkinson (pastor of Alderholt Evangelical Congregational Church)

We will have a meal, followed by Chris’ talk.

We have space for 60 men, so consider prayerfully who you can bring with you. We want a room full of not yet believers to hear God’s word proclaimed through Chris.
Ask friends, family and work colleagues. If you are unable to persuade anyone to join us, you are still more than welcome.

As soon as you decide to come, sign up on the sheet provided. Make sure you put your guest’s name too!!

Finance
We have been asked a number of times about finance. This is the position of the group

Attendance at MBC Men’s Group activities is free. Events are paid for by the group. We do this to allow our guests to attend without any worry about finance. We do not want money (or a lack of) to be barrier to God’s work.
If you would like to contribute to the event, or the group generally, please do so. All contributions will be gratefully received and used for the group’s events.
On average, events cost £20 per person.

We look forward to your support and hope to see as many of you, and your guests, there as possible.

April 2007 Newsletter

We've started a newsletter to go out between events. It should inform people about the event passed and publicise the next event. It has other features including a list of guests for church members to pray for.
Here is the April 2007 edition
Happy reading

Generation Next: where are the future leaders?

Reading the Evangelical Times I found an article on a recently published report. Generation Next and Affinity surveyed 400 church men about their views and opinions about Christian leadership. Their aim being to identify why there is a lack of leaders coming forward from the next generation of men.
It has many interesting findings and issues to highlight. It shows clearly that the issue is complex, but that it is alos one the church should be taking seriously and addressign NOW.

See the report at the Generation Next Web site.

Thanks

Books and Inspiration

Now that the group is up and running, we are gaining momentum and looking at everything about the church through the eyes of men. More specifically through the eyes of men that are Not Yet Believers.

We are getting inspiration from CVM and from a number of books that we are reading. This one is very challenging
Why Men Hate Going To Church - David Murrow

We think there is a lot to do, but we are not sure where to start and how quickly we can bring about change. With lots of prayer, we believe the Lord will guide us and transform MBC into a place men want to be!!

Are you part of a church that has already looked at the issue of making church a more men-friendly place? We'd love to hear of your experiences and ideas - even the things that didn't work!

Maybe reading the posts here has prompted you to consider this topic. if you are just beginning to look at the issue of getting more men into church CVM would be a fantastic place to start.

Monday 26th February 2007 - Go-Karting

2007 Calendar Gets Started
2007 started with plenty of pace for the Moordown Baptist Church Mens Group as they started this year’s calendar of events with a visit to the Go-Karting centre on Matchams Lane.
As usual a great time was had by all. With a good mix of church men and their guests (there were in fact more Not Yet Believers than church men at this event) there was a good atmosphere with more than a hint of competitiveness!
Getting There
The place itself is difficult to find. The entrance is easy enough, but once inside the grounds, the route to the Go-Karting track seems unnecessarily tricky. Maybe it is designed as preparation for what lies ahead.
Starting late, everyone was soon ready. Complete with jump suits, helmets and gloves. This made individuals indistinguishable, which at least meant some of the on-track antics were not personal.
The Race
Teams were chosen and everyone was raring to go. The smell of oil and the rev of the engines clearly bringing out the masculine side in most competitors.
The lead marshal took everyone through the required safety talk - although I am not sure everyone was paying attention going by what actually took place on the track. There were many red-flag incidents whilst karts were turned the right way round, dragged out of the gravel and disentangled. The most spectacular incident of the night belongs to Stephen Coombes: driving through a wall of tyres after missing the turn.
We also saw a different side to the normally mild mannered Mike Trotman. He had an interesting tussle with one of our guests that carried on over a number of laps with neither giving way. Maybe it was his rush to get the race finished in case he needed to make an equally quick trip to the hospital for the latest arrival to the Trotman family?
The event was one hour of continuous racing in teams with regular driver changes and lots of checking the leader board. The ability range was broad, but everyone gave their best and it was clear most teams were out to win. Although the team of ‘seniors’ kept a low profile.
Result
Wayne Harris and Mike Trotman (are you surprised?) managed to secure a place on the podium for Moordown Baptist Church with a highly respectable 2nd place. 1st place went to a team of Mike’s colleagues from P H Warr and 3rd to a team of guests (Jez, Richard and Kelvin).
Despite the 2nd place finish, Wayne managed to take control of the champagne (using the term very loosely) and in traditional fashioned showered the other competitors and spectators. There was little choice after being told by the marshal, ’There’s no point keeping it. Nobody would ever drink the stuff.’
Post-RaceThe evening was rounded off with about half the group going to the nearby Ski Centre for a drink and to carry on discussions about who had the fastest lap time and who caused the crash going through the hair-pin bend!!!

Let's hope the next event goes as well.

New Year – New Events

Following a successful launch of Moordown Baptist Church Men’s Group, at the end of 2006, a calendar of events has been planned for 2007. We have managed to mix the style of events in the hope that, over the year, as many men as possible will attend at least one event: Go-Karting, Sea Fishing, Meals, Family BBQ and Walk and a Pub Quiz.

Our next event is Go-Karting on Monay 26th February at Matcham’s Leisure Park, Hurn Road www.matchamskarting.co.uk. Personally, I am really looking forward to this one, as I know many others are too. We have a maximum of 40 places – this may not be enough!! Hopefully we will not have to turn anyone away.

This is an outreach event, so please consider prayerfully who you will invite to join us for this exciting event. Even if you are not attending, we would greatly appreciate your prayer support for the planning, organisation, safety, boldness when inviting guests and, most importantly, the power of the Holy Spirit being at work.

Calendars and invites for this specific event are available. Please e-mail us to request copies.

We operate an e-mail list to keep people informed of the latest news and upcoming events. If you would like to be added to this list, or if you want more information about this group and the events planned, please e-mail us.

We're currently finalising arrangements for the next event - Go-Karting in February. I am really looking forward to it and many others are too. Final details will be available on the Web Page and invites will be circulated. Make sure you book your place early - places are limited.
